USSD Code to check your NIN Number

It is one thing for you to have a National Identification Number (NIN) slip and it is another thing for you to know your NIN number, or at least keep the slip in a pretty good shape so you can always look it up if need be. But seriously speaking, with the economy of Nigeria and you having alot to ponder about, how would you want to store a 11 digit number (especially the one that doesn't bring money) in memory? If it was your account number, it would be a total different matter.

It has come to the notice of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), that most people in Nigeria have rather misplaced their NIN slip or they can't remember their NIN number. So NIMC has made it alot easier with the introduction of a USSD service that enables you check and retrieve your NIN anytime and anytime with the aid of your mobile phone.

Before we talk about the USSD code to check your NIN number, briefly, let's what know what is NIN and it's importance.

What is NIN?

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a set of unique numbers ( usually 11 digits) that is assigned to every individual when he/she enrolls for the National Identification System by NIMC.

Some of the uses and importance of having your NIN as a Nigerian

  • It is used to identify every citizen and legal permanent residents in Nigeria
  • It is used to prevent multiple identity and Identity fraud
  • It is used to open a bank account
  • It is used to register and check the availability of your National Identification Card (if you enrolled for one)
  • It will be used as a means of registeration in JAMB 2021

What are the things you should know about the National Identification Number (NIN)?

  • It is a 11 unique digit number that is assigned every individual who completes his/her enrollment
  • Nobody can have the same NIN number
  • All citizens are legal residents in Nigeria are eligible to enrol for the NIN
  • The NIN can be gotten from your Local Government Area (LGA) or a bank
  • The NIN of an individual becomes invalid the day the person dies

USSD code to check your Nin Number

Head up to your dialer and dial *346#.

from the options displayed, press '1' to select “NIN Retrieval”, if you are using the same phone number you used to enrol for your NIN.

Press '2' to select "NIN Search", to check your NIN by inputting some of the information you used during registration if you have lost your phone number or using another mobile phone.

Yeah, yeah!! If you have followed me upto this point, then I will say a big congratulations to you. You can now check your NIN on your phone.

NOTE:

  • Using this service attracts a fee of N20 (Twenty Naira) airtime from your account balance.
  • The service is only currently available on the MTN and Airtel mobile networks in Nigeria.
